The International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) is the largest sailing class in the world with members from over 100 countries; it is the leading class in World Sailing for young people.

The objectives of the class are to provide racing for young people at low cost, administer world and continental championships, ensure adherence to one design nature of the boat and support the development of sailing. It provides a route for young sailors to achieve their immediate goals and opens the door to their development and interest in the wider sailing community.  Ensuring the Association is considering sustainability in our operations in line with World Sailing agenda.

Reporting : to the Executive Committee of IODA

The role of Secretary General involves:

  • Proactive development of the Optimist dinghy class
  • Liaising with all stakeholders as necessary – amongst others Members, Builders, Sail Makers, Coaches, Sailors, Suppliers (foils, spars), World Sailing, Continental Associations, Sponsors.
  • Communication with the broader sailing community
  • Developing and maintaining  sponsorship
  • Preparing and managing the budget
  • Preparation of Excom meetings
  • Keeping Excom updated
  • Responsible for the administration and management of service providers.
  • Preparation and organization of the Annual General Meeting and Mid Year Meeting
  • Any other tasks as deemed necessary in the running of the Association
  • Maintaining databases of the Association

The successful candidate can be based anywhere in the world and will demonstrate:

  • Highly organized and pays close attention to detail
  • Self motivated with ability to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to prioritize work load and manage time effectively
  • A  knowledge of the sport sailing
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google, Facebook and other social media platforms
  • A passion and energy for  working with youth
  • High levels of efficiency – responding promptly to a diverse range of requests
  • The ability to lead a diverse organization, with experience of working in a de-centralized structure, which makes sophisticated use of IT
  • Financial awareness (the book-keeping is outsourced)
  • The ability to travel globally when required
