The fourth day of the ASAF Youth Sailing Cup Finals here at Abu Dhabi (5-9 April) was disappointing said both the Race Officers, Ilker Bayinder and Hong Lock Kit as they hoisted the flags indicating there would be no more racing today (Friday) on both the courses.
The Laser classes and the Optimist fleet launched ontime for their first race in 8-10 knots, but were sent back in as the average wind speed decreased to around 2 knots. The plan to hold races after the afternoon prayers, yielded no better results. Races had to abandoned as the winds dropped half way through races.
Mohamed Abdulla Al Hammadi (UAE) won the only race of the day for the Optimist Class, current leader Saif Saeed Al Mansoori (UAE) finished second but maintains a comfortable lead of 12 point over Mohamed Abdulla Al Hammadi.
"It was very lightwind coming from the west, large swell and chop coming through. I messed up my start slightly but I got it back in the end, didn't fall in so just carried on catching up," said Saif Saeed Al Mansoori.
"We were really hoping to get some racing as the prediction was in our favour," said Ilker. "We launched the boats at 10 for an 11 start. The wind was in the 6-8 knot area with a few gusts above that but not really too bad, but it did not stayed like that for quite a long time then at 11 the wind just died.
“We had hoped for making up on the lost races after the prayer break, but it's disappointing for us, however the Optimist class did manage one race, the race officers did a great job to get that race in but overall it is very disappointing” continued Ilker.
"Tomorrow, the forecast is looking a bit the same, so the pressure is on for the race officers, to complete the medal races" concluded Hong Lock Kit.
